A gang of heartless youths ran away laughing after setting a homeless man’s tent on fire while he was inside it.
The children had thrown rocks and stones at the rough sleeper before igniting his tent, in Cabra, Dublin, Ireland, according to a witness.
They set fire to the top of his shelter, after a previous unsuccessful attempt, forcing the man to flee his tent, reports Dublin Live .
The arsonists then ran away laughing, while a council worker who happened to passing by managed to extinguish the flames on Tuesday night.
A witness, called John, who saw the arson unfold from his apartment, said: “From where I am you can see quite far. A couple of days ago someone moved in with a tent.
“”Whoever did it wasn’t doing any harm we didn’t see them.
“Last night [Tuesday] around 8pm I hear kids shouting and running. So I look out the window and I saw a man getting out of the tent.
“There was this big group of kids aged around ten and there was probably about ten of them.
“They were running out across the road.
“About a minute later the group of kids came back and were chucking things at the tent. Rocks and sticks and things.
“So I don’t know what had gone on before but he had gone back in [the tent] and was ignoring it.
“Then they start talking about setting fire, and that’s when I called the guards.”
John said one of the youths tried to set fire to the bottom of the tent but failed.
He added that they then ran back to the tent and successfully ignited it, forcing the homeless man to flee.
The witness described how the tent went up in flames within a couple of minutes, although a heroic council worker came to the rescue with a fire extinguisher and put out the blaze.
